    Brainspotting invites the person to pause, breathe, and make connections that have been dormant for a long time.

    The Process of Brainspotting

    In a brainspotting session, the client brings in a traumatic memory or a significant event in their life and assigns a level of activation to it. This process is then tied to a location or sensation in the body, emphasizing the wisdom of the body and re-establishing the mind-gut connection. 

    When a brainspot is found, it often triggers a physical response, such as eye wobbling or deep breathing. This spot correlates to a part of the brain that holds all the information around the particular event or emotion.

    The Healing Power of Acknowledgment

    Brainspotting can be verbal or nonverbal, and the therapist’s goal is to “follow at the tail of the comet.” The client is invited into an imaginary space where they are fully in control. The hope is they feel safe enough to explore an unincorporated part of themselves. 

    Much of the healing comes from simply acknowledging that disowned self. The therapist provides the container through safety, empathy, and curiosity.
